For Schools
Families Talking provides support for children and their families through schools based support.
The aim of this service is to provide support to children and young people affected by issues arising from the separation or divorce of their parents.
We work in both primary and secondary schools across the Tees Valley delivering both classroom based group support and one-to-one support, as part of the PSHE and SEAL curriculum.
Most recently we have been working with local authorities through initiatives including TaMHS (Targeting Mental Health in Schools), TaPS (Team around Primary Schools) and TASS (Team around Secondary Schools).
Our interventions are highly valued by the schools we work in and subject to funding we plan to roll out our service and offer it to more schools so we can reach more children and young people and help schools meet the Every Child Matters outcomes.
Here are some of the comments and feedback we have received from teaching and support staff :
"Families Talking service within school is vital and offers a service to children and their families meeting needs which would otherwise not be met. The sessions have proved invaluable to the children involved and the staff echo this and we regularly seek referrals to these sessions for children needing support..."
"...(Families Talking) helps us understand the child better"
"...we have seen marked improvements in children within 6 weeks..."
"...(Families Talking) provides a process and a pathway to support"
"We are constantly faced with children who are in emotional turmoil due to family breakdown, unemployment and social issues..."
"...we consider this service as absolutely essential to the wellbeing of our pupils and vital to meeting the Every Child Matters outcomes for our school."
Comments from Children and Young People:
To engage with children and young people in schools, our session lesson plans and resources involve our unique Jelly Families© and we use a range of family and relationship scenarios that children and young people can relate to, discuss with each other, and reflect on.
"I enjoyed being in groups and talking about how Ben feels about his parents splitting up"
"It helped me with my problem"
"I have enjoyed everything and I feel confident to talk to someone about my problems"
"I have enjoyed talking about the jelly baby family and how describing how they feel"
