Families Talking is delighted that we will be continuing to work in partnership with Middlesbrough Borough Council and local schools to further develop and deliver support to children and young people through the Targeting Mental Health in Schools programme.

To engage with children and young people in schools, our session lesson plans and resources involve our unique Jelly Families© and we use a range of family and relationship scenarios that children and young people can relate to, discuss with each other, and reflect on.

Phase 2 of this programme is to be launched in September 2011. You can find out more about this on the ‘Schools’ section of this website.

Our Redcar & Cleveland ‘Parenting Shop’ project has been evaluated by Teesside University. The aim of the project was to improve the lives of adults and children affected by separation and divorce by reducing the conflict and stress experienced as a result of relationship breakdown. The project involved 3 key strands of work:

-	the development and delivery of training modules for front-line professionals focusing on the impact of divorce and
separation on children and parents, and helping them to develop skills to identify and work with these issues more
effectively
-	the development and delivery of support services for parents and children
-	the development and delivery of short courses for parents

The report includes comments and feedback from both parents and key worker professionals and concludes that there were high levels of satisfaction with the services provided. Feedback includes :

“The Parenting Shop has been invaluable to me and my family, supporting me and working through past and current difficult situations”
A parent

“This project has really helped me and my son to turn the corner. We are relating to each other much better”
A parent

“The training was great fun…”
A professional key worker

“I feel much more confident when discussing divorce and separation with clients”
A professional key worker

From 6th April 2011 a new legal protocol was introduced which means that before your solicitor can issue proceedings, it is a requirement for both legally aided and privately paying people to actively consider mediation as an option, and your solicitor may refer you to us for an initial appointment to find out about mediation.

Many people find this helpful even if mediation is not for them, or if they think that their partner would not be interested. However it is often better to consider mediation at an earlier stage, before feelings and attitudes become fixed, so your solicitor may suggest mediation long before this stage.

You can find out more about costs and legal aid in the ‘Mediation’ section of this website.
