Families Talking Families Talking Mediation Benefits Everyone

Parenting Workshops

The aim of the workshops is to provide information to parents to help them identify coping strategies and provide opportunity to seek support from the facilitators.

We use a range of innovative teaching methods including interactive sessions, group work, case studies and the concept of a fictional family.

Evaluation undertaken by the Centre for Health and Social Evaluation (CHASE) at Teesside University showed that parents found the sessions to be tailored to their needs and that they were well supported and helped them resolve many issues.

Examples of feedback from parents taking part:

"The Parenting Shop has been invaluable to me and my family, supporting me and working through past and current difficult situations."

"I was able to bounce ideas off my key worker and made some really good progress in understanding myself."

"This project has equipped me with positivity for my family's future."

"Basically I wanted to get an unbiased, adult, third party opinion and to have my son build a rapport with that person and be able to confide in them, and for them to work with him to look at his behaviour and also that things in life are not as black and white as he sees them."

"The sessions helped me enormously and gave me excellent guidance."

"I realise now that I had spent many years trying to be my son's best friend and a good dad but I realise now that I haven't been a good parent. The worker helped us both talk through what was happening, helped me realise where I was going wrong and also helped him to realise that there were instances that he was being unreasonable."

"This project has really helped me and my son to turn the corner. We are relating to each other much better."

Evaluation showed that the workshops helped parents learn a lot about themselves and about their families. Key learning has included:

  • When to be assertive and how to do it
  • Knowing when to look ‘outside of the box'
  • Becoming much more self aware
  • To be confident in their own judgements
  • Patience
  • Inner strength
