Families Talking Families Talking Mediation Benefits Everyone

Workforce Development Training

Funded by the DfE, Families Talking has developed OCN level 3 accredited training for professionals in awareness and skills around families, adults and children with separation issues.

The training has been developed to align with the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for 'Work with Parents' and 'Children’s Care, Learning and Development'.

Each topic area covered within the training is directly aligned with one or more specific NOS units so that trainees are aware of how each area of their training links specifically with NOS.

The training involves group workshops and the Families Talking 'Working with Separated Parents Toolkit'® to support professional learning and its practical implementation. The toolkit contents include learning on :

  • Policy
  • Family Mapping
  • Working with Conflict
  • Complex Needs
  • Step Families

Professionals who have benefited from the training include: Teachers, Parent Support Advisors, Social Workers, Health Visitors, Sure Start Children's Centre staff and Family Support Workers.

The training has undergone formal evaluation by the Centre for Health and Social Evaluation (CHASE) at Teesside University. The evaluation found that all participants reported high levels of satisfaction and that the training is of high quality.

Examples of feedback from frontline professionals who took part :

"It has given me an understanding of the impact of divorce and separation and I am already starting to use the new knowledge when I am working with clients."

"The training was great fun. The way it was presented was really good, they kept to time and it had the right amount of group work and home study."

"The sessions were really well planned and the content related directly to practice."

The fact that the training is accredited is a real positive and participants reported that they would recommend the course to colleagues and other agencies.

We will continue to develop and extend our professional training activity, offering both accredited and non-accredited options.
